Wake-Up Call

wake-up-call

I have begun a journey that will prove to be the biggest challenge of my life. I am a 63 year old grandmother who has dealt with being overweight most of my adult life. Along with the weight comes high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. My doctor suggested the lap band surgery as a solution. Wow, that was a wake -up call for me. I suddenly realized that I have spent my entire life seeing to other’s needs and somehow along the way I lost myself.

I have so severely neglected myself that should I continue down this road, I will not be here to enjoy my grandson and my soon to be born granddaughter. I set out to find a good weight loss program that I can live with and started walking to build up my stamina. My first walk was not more than a block and I was out of breath. The next day I walked a little further. After a few weeks, I am now walking two miles a day! I remember a conversation I had with my doctor when I shared with her that I had secretly always wanted to be a runner but my life has passed by too quickly and at age 63 I could hardly walk a block. She surprised me when she said If I really wanted to run, it is not too late.

baby-steps

She told me I had to start with baby steps and work my way up from there. Well, realistically, the running thing is probably not for me, but I know now, I can walk. On days that its not pouring down the rain, you will find me and my sisters out on the Whitewater trail or walking the trail at the Brookville grandstand. With this newly found enthusiasm and self confidence I believe it is not unrealistic to fulfill another dream I have entertained. Since the very beginning discussions of doing a walk along the Whitewater Canal to raise public awareness, I have dreamed that I would walk it one day. I have decided that this is my time to do it. It’s now or never. I have challenged myself to get the weight off and build up my stamina by September and walk for the cause. I know I will need a little help from my friends. First of all I need your prayers .

My faith in God keeps me going. Every lap that I walk I thank Him for the strength to do it. Every day that I make it though and maintain a healthy diet, I give thanks. Through this walk, I hope to inspire others like me who have somehow forgotten to take care of themselves along the way . I want them to know that it is never too late. Won’t you join me in this journey? Come walk with me and take back your life. You owe yourself that much.
