Walking With The Saints

I have found that it’s always a good thing to keep a sense of humor in everything I set out to do. This is particularly true if its something that is repetitious and difficult like working out in a gym. My buddy and I decided to join a local gym to improve our weight loss and build up our muscles. She (my sister, Regina) worked for years in the physical therapy department and knows the importance of keeping our bodies in tune and our muscles strong. I had reached a plateau in my weight loss and figured the weight training would help speed things up a bit. We found this awesome gym that is open to us 24/7. We sometimes work out after hours but feel very safe because of the security system and members of the local police department are also working out during those hours.

We joined about eight weeks ago and already we are seeing results. We were advised by the instructor to start out very slowly with no weights at all on the machines but gradually add weights as our bodies adjust. We are up to 40 pounds and gradually moving into 50 pounds on some machines. The Core/AB machine is different. That machine is a killer! I dread that one so much, but it is probably doing me more good than I realize. The most I can do on that machine is 60 repetitions with 15 pounds of weight , however, I am nearing a point where I will be able to move up to 20 pounds soon. One day my sister was on the Core machine and a big muscle bound police officer was working out on the machine right beside her. I could see both of them as I was facing them from the other side of the room. She was doing sets of ten with 15 pounds of weight.

The officer did two or three and yelled and groaned and was sweating bullets. He stopped a couple of times to wipe the sweat and rest a minute. I have seen those guys lift tremendous amounts of weights. I am just amazed at their strength. I was thinking this guy must have at least a hundred pounds on that Core machine. He started up again and with each repetition, he continues to groan and literally scream in agony. I asked my sister how much weight she was using. She replied, “Fifteen pounds.” I asked her to look and see how much weight he was using. She said, “Twenty pounds!” I just about lost it! He got up after about 8 repetitions and wiped sweat and seemed very proud of his accomplishment. I looked at Regina and we both just broke out into an uncontrollable laugh. Well, I sure wouldn’t want to depend on that guy if I really was in bad need of a police officer, but I guess he did add a little humor to our workout that day.

We left the gym after our usual hour and half work out and decided we wanted to walk the trail at the Brookville Park. We remembered there was a ball game going on and didn’t want to dodge the flying baseballs . Then we saw the St. Michael Cemetery right across the street from the gym. I noticed that it’s paved all the way through and there are a few shady spots and also part of it is uphill which makes for a really good aerobic work out. What a perfect place to walk. We picked up our sister Loretta and all three of us walked with the Saints that day. It was actually quite pleasant and we read all the tombstones as we walked by. It was great! We didn’t have to worry about getting hit with a ball, kids flying by on their bicycles or dogs attacking us and we could talk about anything we wanted with nobody to hear us.

Sometimes you just need to switch things up a little to hold your interest. If you find yourself getting bored with your workouts or dreading the idea of going to the gym, just look for the humor and fun of it all. It really helps to keep things going. You don’t really need expensive equipment or a lot of money to spend. Just check out the local cemeteries. Most of them are paved and you may know some of the residents there. It’s the best way I know of to prevent yourself from becoming one of those permanent residents before your time. Get yourself healthy and live life to its fullest as long as you can. You owe that to yourself and to those who love you.
