You’ve Got to Love Yourself

Two of my favorite television programs are aired the same night in the same time slot. I generally switch channels back and forth, but this week The Biggest Losers caught my attention and for two hours I was glued to the television. The program was about walking a 5K event which I am training to do through Weight Watchers. I was so moved by this program and so inspired by the unbelievable determination of each of the contenders; it was as though I was seeing this program for the first time. Oh, I have seen this program many, many times while eating a big bag of potato chips. Oh, yes, I would be quite moved at times to the point of tears falling into the chips! I would think to myself how ridiculous this must look and then quickly dismiss the thought as I reached for another snack.

You see, for some stupid reason, I put the thought into my head that if I did not lose the weight by the time I was fifty, I would never lose it. That was just an excuse on my part. I had tried and failed so many times that I had simply given up on myself. I didn’t even like myself at this point. After the wake- up call from my doctor and a little boy named Alexander, I found the determination to give it another try. So, there I sat in the dark watching The Biggest Loser, not with a big bag of potato chips but a hand full of raw carrots and a whole new attitude. These were real people experiencing real life issues yet they were still determined to stay focused on their goal. One person’s brother passed away and his training was interrupted for a couple of days. He struggled as he worked through the pain of losing someone he loved so much yet he understood the need to work on getting his health back. Life events are going to happen to all of us, but the important thing is to work through it and find a way to move on and get back on track.

If there was one thing I would want you to grasp, it would be that it’s ok to love yourself. How can we possibly be the person that God intends for us to be if we fail to take care of the bodies He gave us? How can we love and do unto others, if we don’t love and take care of ourselves? The thought sometimes comes to mind that I am so sorry for all of the years that I have wasted. Then I am reminded that if God forgives me, then I need to forgive myself and move on. I try not to dwell on negative thoughts because it can only breed doubt. I have decided to forgive myself for all the abuse and neglect to my body and look for the hope and determi-nation I need to take this journey all the way. I challenge you to stop looking back, to go forward with a positive outlook and do something for yourself. If walking a block is your limit, then do it consistently and push yourself to walk two blocks. I promise you will find a strength that you never knew existed. The most important thing is that you will learn to love yourself and that’s a “good” thing.

Here is an update of my progress since I began this journey. I am now able to walk 2.5 miles a day. My goal this week is to walk three miles. I have lost a total of 26 pounds. My blood pressure is good, my cholesterol excellent and my sugar level has dropped 30 points. It’s working! \o/
